The Trading Post | 02.11.26

Good morning,

Futures are inching higher after the Dow notched its third straight record, January’s delayed jobs report drops at 8:30am (brace yourself), AI fear is now smacking wealth managers, Alphabet just printed a casual $32B bond deal for its AI arms race, and Trump is reportedly ordering the Pentagon to buy coal-fired power. Subtle.

Let’s jump in.

Yesterday’s Post-Market Performance

As of 02.10.26 market close.

Market News

  • January Jobs Report Drops at 8:30am: The most important print of the week hits this morning — NFP, unemployment rate, and wages. CPI follows later this week. Volatility traders, your moment has arrived. Benzinga

  • AI Fear Spreads to Wealth Managers: LPL -11%, Schwab, Raymond James, and Stifel sold off as traders price in robo-advisors eating fee structures for breakfast. Utilities and real estate quietly outperformed while financials bled. Rotation is real. Reuters

  • Alphabet Raises ~$32B in Record Bond Sale: The largest tech bond deal ever — proceeds earmarked for AI infrastructure. Translation: the capex arms race isn’t slowing. Also flagged new AI risks in the prospectus. Because lawyers. Bloomberg

  • Massive Earnings Slate Today: McDonald’s, Shopify (108x P/E…bold), Vertiv, Hilton, Kraft Heinz, GlobalFoundries, Humana pre-market. Cisco after the close. Expect movement — especially in high-multiple names if guidance wobbles. Nasdaq

  • Trump to Order Pentagon to Buy Coal: Executive order reportedly directs military electricity sourcing toward coal-fired plants, with $175M in DOE upgrades. Coal names could see sympathy flows; ESG Twitter may combust. Bloomberg

Daily Moment of Zen

Rule number one: Most things will prove to be cyclical. Rule number two: Some of the greatest opportunities for gain and loss come when other people forget rule number one.

Howard Marks

Why It Matters:

Markets have a short memory and a long history.

Every cycle feels permanent while you’re inside it. AI dominance feels unstoppable. Rate hikes feel endless. Coal is dead. Coal is back. Tech is invincible. Tech is over. Lather, rinse, repeat.

The edge comes when you remember that extremes don’t last — but pain can.

When everyone believes “this time is different,” you’re usually closer to a turn than a continuation. That’s where the asymmetric trades live. But that’s also where people blow up — because fading a cycle too early hurts.

Cyclical awareness doesn’t mean blindly calling tops and bottoms.
It means sizing properly when sentiment is stretched.
It means scaling into fear and trimming into euphoria.
It means recognizing that parabolic moves eventually retrace… and despair eventually rallies.

The market’s biggest opportunities show up when the crowd mistakes a phase for a forever.

Don’t forget rule number one.
