Daily Moment of Zen

The way to build superior long-term returns is through preservation of capital and home runs. When you have tremendous conviction on a trade, you have to go for the jugular. It takes courage to be a pig.

Stanley Druckenmiller

Why It Matters:

This quote is basically the polite way of saying what every seasoned trader learns the hard way: you can’t compound what you keep blowing up. Capital preservation is the boring hero of long-term returns—it’s the seatbelt you don’t appreciate until the market hits a pothole the size of a CPI print.

But the second half is where the quote earns its trading stripes. “Go for the jugular” doesn’t mean YOLOing weekly calls based on vibes. It means when the stars align—your setup, your data, your thesis, your timing, and your risk management—you size up rationally and swing like you actually want to get paid for being right.

And yes, it takes courage to be a pig—not the undisciplined “rolling in mud” kind of pig, but the rare breed that waits patiently, protects capital religiously, and only feasts when the table is set. Most traders are either too fearful to size up or too reckless to sit tight. The pros know when to do both.

In short:
Protect your downside like a paranoid accountant.
Press your winners like you’re trying to retire early.
And never confuse courage with recklessness—smart pigs live longer.
